Medicines help us find relief from many health issues. But their importance goes far beyond that. Medications save lives and help us live healthier. Not using them wisely can be dangerous and lead to more problems in our bodies.

Doctors always, without doubt, prescribe medications with good intentions. Their prescription is always based on their diagnosis, medical knowledge, and experience. However, a patient remains responsible for what they consume, including medicines into their body.

Here are some suggestions from a medical doctor to consider when using medications.

Every medicine has side effects. Most times, the benefits outweigh the side effects. But it is best to be informed. Do not hesitate to ask your doctor what drug is being prescribed and its possible side effects.

Medicines affect each individual differently. Your doctor cannot anticipate a given drug’s exact effect on you. If you are frightened by unexpected side effects from a medication you took, immediately inform your doctor. Also, if you are unsure if a drug is working, you should speak to your doctor.

Ask your doctor how long you will need to take medicine and if it is potentially addictive. You may become physically dependent on some medicinal drugs if you take them for long periods.

You may experience mental withdrawal symptoms when you stop them, making it challenging for you to stop the medications. Be sure to find out about this information from your doctor.

Do not stop taking a doctor’s prescription on your own, even if you feel better, because this may worsen your condition. Instead, find out from your doctor first and follow his recommendations.

Do not self-medicate, especially for drugs you require a prescription to buy. It is advisable always to take prescription medicines under your physician’s supervision. Self-medication could cause risks such as incorrect self-diagnosis, incorrect dosage, and severe adverse reactions.
